The Inside Out Cabinet takes the pre-modern necessity of secret drawers and turns it into a playful centrepiece. Goodrum imagined the cabinet as an old man who had made his money on the goldfields: the calm, sophisticated white exterior represents his public face, the colourful interior represents his youth and the origins of his wealth.

The Inside Out Cabinet tells the story of one man and two contrasting phases of his life. Initially the piece was inspired by the stories of gold diggers hiding their gold from thieves. The final design uses Goodrum’s fascination with folding mechanisms to convey a lifelong, rather than fleeting, narrative: the colourful interior represents the wildly ambitious young man, taking risks and coming out successful, then when inverted, the off-white outer skin reflects a life lived gently acquiring wisdom, cultured conversation, philanthropy, and the slow careful accumulation of greater wealth.

The inside of the Cabinet is not an embarrassment to the outside. The inside is the fuel and a constant reminder of origin.
