The Private Property Prints are based on the evolution and migration of British private property law — a fundamental mechanism that forced indigenous Australians off their land and ensured the demise of traditional land management strategies.

The Private Property prints are based on a dialogue between Broached and John Warwicker on the evolution and migration of British private property law. Although neither parties are jurisprudence professors it seems obvious that the arrival of private property law (backed up with a gun) is the fundamental mechanism that forced indigenous Australians off their land and ensured the demise of traditional land management strategies. Private property law within a capitalist society removes the land from the commons and places it in the hands of a market.

John Warwicker is co-founder of world renowned interdisciplinary London based design studio TOMATO and techno band Underworld. The prints are part of a long standing commitment in Warwicker’s work to the historical evolution of typography. This series was commissioned in 2018 for the NGV’s Design Storytellers: The work of Broached Commissions.
