The aspiration of Chen Lu’s Dressing Table was to create an intimate object especially designed for a person’s preparation of their face and hair or to hide certain personal treasures. The basic idea is that it breaks down the ubiquity of the bathroom mirror, basin and drawers and creates a more intimate, separated relationship to preparing for the day.

The design development for this dressing table focused on a range of practical considerations; the placement of the object in a small bedroom or dressing room, the compactness being offset by a number of drawers for storage and of course the placement of a mirror, but one that could be folded down so as to not be a constant feature of a room.

Chen Lu has designed a stunning stacked work, with six drawers pivoting out on both sides of the dressing table. The piece takes direct inspiration from Meiji period Geisha dressing tables and this is reflected in the black lacquer finish to the exterior of the object. This highly practical, intimate object is designed as a dresser but can ultimately serve any number of purposes.
